of the event. Around 11 pm a crowd forms around a pile of wood and
tree branches in the middle of the square. Parents lift their
children onto their shoulders to make sure they get a good
view. Towards the end of the last hour of the year, a brass
band begins to play. Forty-five Allendale men then
parade around the centre of the village with shallow
wooden barrels containing burning tar on their heads.
